Maintenance Tips

Fall Maintenance

Lawns:
This time if year our grass is on our minds. Coming off of a hot summer, lawns are in definite need of repair. This is a great time during late September and into early October, to get your plugging and seeding done to help repair any dry or dead patches in your lawn. Many residents have hired companies to help and you can easily find recommendations on our Facebook page.

Planting and Weeding:
It's a great time of year to plant shrubs and trees that will bloom in the spring and summer. It's also a great time to remove any shrubs, trees or plants that didn't make it through the summer.

Winterizing:

Time to start thinking about the exterior of your home and winterizing. Clean the gutters, check siding for cracks and gaps, prepare air conditioner for winter and remove sticks, leaves, or debris that have built up around the unit, purchase AC cover to place over the top, trim tree limbs, drain hose pipes and store outdoor furniture.

Helpful Tips for Lawn and Yard Maintenance:

For detailed landscaping guidelines see this page: Ashlyn Creek Landscaping Guidelines

  1. Weekly Mow, Edge & Blow: Be sure that your lawn is kept up and mowed regularly. During the spring into fall, typically this includes a weekly mow and blow.

  2. Attention To Detail: Pick up debris, weeding gardens and remove all dead or dying trees, flowers and shrubs

  3. Lawns vs. weeds: Lawns should be mostly grass with very few weeds

  4. Regular Pruning—As NeededPrune trees and bushes to keep them in a nice shape, tidy looking at not overgrown or growing into neighbor's yard.

  5. Appropriate Fertilization: Experts recommend 4 to 5 fertilizer applications annually, and timing depends on the grass variety and time of year. For example, Bermuda grass goes dormant in winter so it requires very little maintenance at that time (fertilizer or mowing) but Fescue requires maintenance throughout the year.

  6. Irrigation System Maintenance and IrrigationProper lawn irrigation is important to help keep your lawn from dying during the summer months. Irrigations systems need to be checked throughout the year so that you do not have a broken sprinkler head and flushed during the winter so that they do not freeze.
